Lace Textured Clay Hearts

Leaf Green Lace Textured Clay Heart
Love is in air...just everywhere :)
Its Christmas, New Year, Valentine and finally, I'm able to complete the love hearts ...I experimented lace texture on both the sides of the clay...which was indeed a challenge as you tend to loose the back side impression when you are working on the top side. But the textures have come up really well. Ive colored them with Red, Blue, White, Leaf Green and a little sparkle to add glamour!! These little Christmas charms are vibrant and perfect for indoor and outdoor decoration.
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year :)

New buds are blossoming in my studio..little hands are doing their magic with clay and weaving their ideas...be it a little rabbit, or a coaster, clay stamp, little Elle, or a very tiny coil pot for their studytable. Here are some pics of lovely sunny afternoons and clay work by my young pottery students.

Terracotta Pendant

I never tried my hands in making terracotta ornament. So this time i thought of making something unique and stylish. So here Im with my first terracotta pendant. I used a slab of clay to carve out this long rectangular design. I carved out wavy lines to give the 3D effect to this pendant. It is an original piece of artwork and I hand painted it with acrylic color inspired by Aboriginal dot painting. I personally find dotted pattern beautiful and attractive. I've added different hues of colors so it can be worn with most of the dresses. This pendant is hung on a 16 inch simple cotton cord. It is 4inches long and 1 inch wide pendant. Thanks for looking and liking it...
Happy Claying :)

Bisque Firing Session

Finally, the big day is here!!
This is the day I long for....Whenever i finish making my pottery piece, i feel like bisque firing it immediately. Alas... I cannot do it immediately...first, i do not have an electric kiln and secondly i should have enough number of pieces to make firing effective in natural firing as well. This time we set up firing for approx 200 small pieces. We had to leave few big pieces as there was not enough space to accommodate all of them.

Next morning, we were nervous and excited before opening the bhatti as it is the result day. The process of finding your piece from a heap of ash is divine. To our surprise, firing went extremely well...there was only 5 percent breakage unlike my previous firing sessions. I'm happy that my students's pieces were 100% fired :)
There was slight damage of my pottery collection, especially the coil diya.  For rest of the pottery, the output is a mix as this time some of my pieces got real terracotta shade and some got burnished black colour. I want to use this shade of black as it looks awesome and gives a very antique look to the pottery.

Here are few pics of the most important days.

Incense Stick Holder cum Puja Thaali

Everytime my Mom in Law (MIL) lights an agarbatti (Incense Stick) in our mandir, the ashes spills n spoils the cotton cloth spread on the mandir slab. I always request her to place the incense holder at the center of puja thaali but she forgets it everytime (poor mommy :) This time she challenged me to make something creative that could save this mess....So here i'm with a big leaf with a flower shaped incense holder permanently attached to it. She also lights dhup batti, that again spills lot of ash..so this one is a combo pack. Now she can use this as a puja thaali as well as just incense holder :) Happy Praying Mommy Darling!!

Gautam Buddha Mask

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Terracotta Buddha Mask
This is THE famous "Buddha Chant" practiced by people all over the world and I got to know about this chant only few days back from a girl whom I met in a metro train. In our 15 min conversation, she tried explaining me the meaning of this chant. Another similar incidence happened with me after 5 days. A pottery student of mine mentioned about this chant and told me how it has improved her life.
.....Is it just a matter of chance that in a span of a week, I got to meet two people who believed in this chant n advises me to do it? Just wondering why i didn't hear ab't it from the people i know. Since I'm NOT a non-believer and always try to know good things about other religions...so I thought of practicing this chant ...i don't know how n why but i did start feeling good after practicing it!! The best part is that you need to chant it with your eyes wide open unlike in other religions.

Anyways, this chant is not yet synched in me...but certainly since that day i have been wanting to make a Buddha Face with wet clay. I was little skeptical and scared as I didn't want to spoil this creation as it was first of its kind. This is a pure handmade form of pottery ...I didn't use any mold, its made using different handbuilding techniques. Here is a glimpse of my most loved pottery creation till date...I found this buddha mask very cute.
Happy Chanting!!

Tea Light Holder: Coil Work

Coil with a curve!!
This was in my mind when I thought of experimenting something different with coil other than making a pot. I wanted to make a small piece that can be a unique gifting idea for festive season. This pottery piece can be used as table coaster as well as tea light holder.

Happy Coiling!!

Ganesha Idol

Every time I start writing my blog post, I feel  the same level of excitement like i had when i first wrote my  blog post to showcase my debut pottery creation. The reason may be that I always try experimenting something new and test my limits!! Sometimes I get success n sometimes I just spoil Clay, hands, studio, tools...just everything.
Well, Success....I post on blog and failures...hmmm... I keep them to myself sshhhh :-) This time I did what I had been wanting to do. I created a kind of sculpture...hmm well "Idol" would be the right word....An Indian Idol :-)

I created Ganesha Idol using Pinch technique. It is made of terracotta clay and can be used as an Eco friendly Ganesha. Since, I wanted to bisque fire this idol...I kept it hollow from inside...else the piece could burst during firing. I did not use any mold to make this shape...its purely hand building!! By grace of God, it has really come up well!! Here are few poses of My Friend Ganesha:>
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!! (belated)

Terracotta Coil Pot with a twist

Twisting, tweaking, spiraling, fixing, rebuilding, rejuvenating, praying, Ive been doing all this for last couple of days while making this creative coil pot. And finally this is done and is all ready for bisque firing. This is a dual purpose pot...it can be used as a flower vase and if inverted can be hanged as a lamp shade. I've given a provision for adding bulb holder inside this vase.
At night it looked awesum when i clicked pictures with T-light inside it.

There are lot of variations in coil technique and as ceramic artist I'm enjoying experimenting new creation each day....

Happy Coiling!!
